The Mission of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International is to provide professional
and personal growth for women educators and excellence in education.

Purposes of Delta Kappa Gamma
1. To unite women educators of the world in genuine spiritual friendship.
2. To honor women who have given or who evidence a potential for distinctive service in any field of education
3. To advance the professional interest and position of women in education
4. To initiate, endorse, and support desirable legislation or other suitable endeavors in the interest of education and of women and educators
5. To endow scholarships to aid outstanding women educators in pursuing graduate study and to grant fellowships to women educators from other countries
6. To stimulate the personal and professional growth of members and encourage their participation in appropriate programs in action
7. To inform the members of current economic, social, political and educational issues so that they may participate effectively in a world society

A Brief Message from the President

Spring is truly showing her face as the trees leaf, the flowers bloom, and the sun warms our days and lifts our spirits! Our April meeting was delightful in providing fellowship and fulfilling DKG purposes. The Grant in Aid recipients inspired enthusiasm for future educators and the Remembrance Ceremony honored our past. Your generosity in offering opportunities for young students was overwhelming. Grant- in- Aid Recipients are Chosen

The 2015 grant recipients are Emily Fjone and Sarah Marston. The Iota Grant-in-Aid committee, Lynne Ensworth chair, and committee members, Deb Rich, Denise Tallakson, ALlison Barness and Nancy White selected these two women from among the many qualified candidates.
  Emily is an elementary and middle level education major with concentration areas in science and social studies. She worked part time at UPS while normally taking 18 credit hours of classes. Emily is currently a  member of Art for El Salvador and is planning to go with other members in May to take suplies to the dedication of the middle school that was recently built. She has tutored middle school students at UNI-CUE in Waterloo and has been on the Dean's List at UNI.
   Sarah is a senior at UNI majoring in Elementary Education with minors in special education and literacy. While at UNI, Sarah has been involved with the Student Reading Association and volunteered with UNI's Kingergym program, America Reads tutoring program, English Learner's Club and Saturday morning English tutoring for adults from Myanmar. She also played the cello in UNI's orchestra and was involved with the campus ministry group, Navigators.

Special Congratulations are Given

Congratulations to Marg Herrick, who is a 50 year DKG member. She was initiated into the Clinton chapter May 27, 1965. She became a member of Iota Chapter in 1969; retiring from Black Hawk Elementary as a 1st grade teacher.

Congratulations to Janelle Kimpston, 2015 Gold Star for Outstanding Teaching recipient. Janelle is a kindergarten teacher at Orange Elementary School. She is one of 558 teachers nominated for this award. The program honoring all the recipients was May 19 at GBPAC.
Well done Mary Loomer and Terri Brandt for your work with implementing Leader in Me at Hoover Middle School. They presented 'Student Led Conferences' at UNI's Leader in Me Symposium which drew participants from across the Midwest and beyond.

Terrific work Janelle Kimpston and Carol Boyce for your efforts to help Orange Elementary achieve the distinction of being designated a Lighthouse School, one of only 123 in the world.

Congratulations Susan Holmgren who won the door prize at the April meeting. She took home the planter that was used to demonstrate Heide Tietz's concept of using a 'thiller',  'filler', and 'spiller' when planting container gardens.

Remembrance Ceremony is Held

Iowa Chapter lost three members this last year. Patricia Scoles was honored during last June's meeting. A Remembrance Ceremony held at April's meeting honored Bernadine Schaefer and Dr. Mildred Wood.
