2003 Southwest Regional Conference
July 9-12
Scottsdale, Arizona

Thirteen members from Utah attended the Southwest Regional in Scottsdale, Arizona. Among them were first-timers Nancy Mickelson and Martha Bayer.

Nancy wrote, "What really impressed me most was that Delta Kappa Gamma truly is an international society of women educators. We met and got to know sisters from the southwestern states, Hawaii, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Mexico. We even had some from MO, PA, and NY. Our International President, Jean Gray, was there to address us. What an impression they all made! I returned home knowing that I belong to a tremendous force (150,000 in 14 countries) of intelligent and accomplished educators. Now each time I wear my keypin, I feel powerful as a woman educator. Take the opportunity to attend a Regional Conference or International Convention. You'll never be the same!

Martha wrote, "Delta Kappa Gamma is truly a group of KEY WOMEN EDUCATORS. I found this to be the case at the Regional Conference. The conference emphasized the seven purposes of Delta Kappa Gamma. It provided an opportunity to meet other educators, not only from Southwest, but from all over the world. I learned that you don't have to attend the conference in your region. Educators came from as far away as New York. The Southwest Regional Conferece was truly a memorable experience."

xxxx The Southwest Regional Conference, held during August 1-4, 2001, saw many Delta Kappa Gamma members from this area gather at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
xxxx Prior to the conference, members toured the city and surrounding area, visited Santa Fe, and near-by Indian pueblos. The general sessions allowed members to hear from International Officers about what's going on in the organization. During these meetings, the members heard from two educational experts: Dr. Debbie Estes presented material about current brain research, and Patsy Lanclos gave an excellent presentation on technology and its uses in classrooms today.
xxxx Interactive "Info Fairs" were held each day in the foyer between the general sessions and workshops. Displays from about four committees were set up each time and members could talk with people as well as look at information about a committee's work. A variety of workshops was held dealing with the business of the Society and education. Members had the opportunity to learn more about Focus 2000, the Society's publications, Golden Gift opportunities, membership strategies, and parliamentary procedures. Educational topics included cultural diversity, character education, leadership in teaching and learning, and partnerships.
xxxx On the lighter side, members were treated to a fun "New Mexico Night", and on Friday evening, a "Night on the Town". On Saturday morning, a mile walk/run for cancer was held. Participants enjoyed the activity with sisters in the Society.
xxxx Saturday night found many members exhausted from a week filled with meetings and activities. They reluctantly said good-by to old and new friends. But they were also filled with new enthusiasm and great ideas for implementing the work of the Society in their states.

CNN Tower Highlights From the 2000 International Convention in Toronto

Three Utah members attended the 2000 International Convention in Toronto July 25-29. Karen Raleigh, LeAnn Leishman, and Kathy Boyer participated in convention activities and enjoyed the hospitality of Delta Kappa Gamma sisters of Beta State, Ontario and the cosmopolitan atmosphere of Toronto.

This was the first time that an international convention has been held outside of the United States. As international president Evelyn Barron wrote, this was an opportunity to "learn about Society programs and projects, participate in discussion and decision-making, expand professional and culural horizons, and make new friends."

The Convention theme was "Enlighten, Enrich, Empower - Keys to the Future," and speakers addressed these topics at each session. As convention attendees, we participated in general sessions, discussed and voted on Standing Rules, and enjoyed the traditional Southwest regional breakfast, Birthday Luncheon and Saturday Banquet. Individually, we represented Utah in Society events and procedures. Karen attended leadership sessions and international board meetings. LeAnn presented a workshop on writing for The Delta Kappa Gamma Bulletin with members of the Editorial Board. Kathy served as a member of the Convention Elections Committee.

Special moments of the 2000 Convention included the installation of the international officers for the 2000-02 biennium and the Hour of Remembrance in memory of departed sisters. Visits to local areas of interest, including city and harbor tours, Niagara Falls, and the CN Tower provided lasting memories of a great experience.
