Bits and Bites from Susan
- Wondering what the Cascades Council is? The Cascades Council includes five chapters: Beta Alpha, Battle Creek; Nu, Albion; Omicron, Jackson; Beta Beta, Jackson; Gamma, Hillsdale and Branch County. The purpose of the Council is to network, share ideas, to make the Delta Kappa Gamma Organization greater and to share socially and professionally.
- Roses to the members who attended Cascades Council. They were Sue F., Kathy H., Charlotte W., Velma L., Eleanor R., Florence W., Margaret M., Diane S., and Susan H. We had a great turn out. The other chapters were very impressed.
- Roses to Diane S. for packing up her car with the musical instruments, writing special songs and performing at Cascades Council.
- Roses to Margaret M., for working so very hard on our websites both for our chapter and at the state level.
- Remember that our State President will be attending our Nov. 20th meeting. Come join us and get to know J-Jay.
- Just a reminder! Our project for the community this year to do an Under Cover Project. In other words, we have promised to purchase underwear, t-shirts, socks for both sexes of adult's and children's sizes. Each time you go into a store purchase a pair of socks or what ever you can afford, so by the time our Christmas party comes around we will have plenty to give to the homeless. The donations will be distributed through the program of Gods Works. We will not be having our auction this year, so why not put those efforts towards the Undercover Project?
The Power Of An Invitation
One morning a Delta Kappa Gamma friend met me in the hall at school. " I noticed you were absent from our chapter meeting last night, " She said. "We missed you. Will you be there next time?" "No, I replied, "I don't think I can make it." Maybe another time..."
Two chapter members asked me the next week if I would come to the next meeting. I said to the first, I wish I could, but I really don't think I can." The next I answered, "My schedule looks impossible, but I'll try to find the time to come."
In the post office a fourth member asked if I would be at the next meeting of the chapter. "I'll try to come, I replied, "but I may not make it." At the grocery store, a fifth member stopped me and told me how much fun that had at our Delta Kappa Gamma meetings and how good the programs were. She told me how much I was missed. I promised I would be at the next meeting for sure.
I don't know whose official duty it was to contact me, but I couldn't resist the invitation from five different members. We all like to go where we are wanted!
If you want an inactive, uninvolved, reluctant, and or absentee to attend chapter meetings you must let them know that you really want them to come. Find an opportunity to remind them and invite them back to meetings.

October 23, 2008
The October meeting was held at Smith Road Elementary, 1135 Smith Road, Temperance, Michigan. Members present were: Mary Jean B., Susan F., Beth G., Barb H., Kathy H., Susan H., Bonnie J., Randi K., Velma L., Joan L., Becky M., Margaret M., Jonell N., Pam O., Ardath O., Eleanor R., Diane S., Marge W., Rosemary W., Florence W., Charlotte W., Sandra W., and Sheryl Z.
The meeting was called to order at 5:05 pm by President Susan H. She introduced Sandy W. Sandy then presented her "Solving the Reading Puzzle" program; a multi-sensory, balanced literacy approach to teaching reading skills.
The minutes of the September 25, 2008 meeting were approved with the following corrections: The theme of the International Society is "From Vision to Action: Advancing the Society". Kathy reported a total of $23.42 donated during the August DKG meeting.
The Cascades meeting was discussed and members were reminded to give money for reservations to Sheryl Z. by November 1. Kathy H. used some of the donated gifts to create a basket for the silent auction at Cascades.
Kathy also reported that another donation gift basket from Beta Rho was presented at the Fall Conference held in Alpena.
Treasurer Sue F. explained that the proposed budget for 2008-2009 was being passed around to members. A motion by Margaret M. that we accept the proposed budget as distributed today was passed. The Award of the Rose was discussed by President Susan. Members supporting members category helps and encourages "first timers" to participate in attending a conference.
President Susan asked if the committee contacted President J-Jay concerning overnight accommodations for the November 20 meeting. It was explained that it is the Chapter's responsibility to provide meal and overnight accommodations if the Chapter invited the President to attend a Chapter meeting. Kathy H.'s committee has made plans to provide food for the November 20th meeting at St. Paul's United Methodist Church.
President Susan said she would talk to J-Jay about accommodations. Florence W. offered her house as a possible overnight accommodation.
Nominations for new members are still needed.
Last month Mary Jean shared information about herself in the newsletter. Please consider volunteering information about yourself and send it to Bonnie J. for publication in the newsletter so that we may all learn to know each other better.
A motion by Rosemary W. that we give permission to Margaret M. to move our web site off the International site and onto www.teragramwebdesign.com was passed.
Rosemary W. won the raffle, and Kathy expressed appreciation for all those contributing to World Fellowship Fund.
President Susan suggested that we wear our DKG pins in public to create more exposure for our society.
The meeting was adjourned at 6:40 pm, followed by singing of DKG song.
