Women's Storybook Project of Texas
Women's Storybook Project is a volunteer program that started in Austin, Texas in 2003 and targets the children of women who are imprisoned at Gatesville prisons. Statistics show that one out of every five children of incarcerated parents also end up in prison. This project strives to change this statistic by developing strong relationships between mothers and their children.
Beta Tau will provide materials and support to the Women's Storybook Project of Texas, a program to benefit children of incarcerated women through having eligible women in prison read stories to be taped and sent to their children. We will purchase books, audiotapes, and offer further financial support to assist with expenses of postage and travel for the individuals providing this valuable service to encourage the parent-child connection and literacy.
This is an on-going project for our chapter.
Adopt A Child - Back To School
Beta Tau participated in the Christian Assistance Ministries’ “Adopt-A-Child – Back-To-School” program. Our first year of involvement was a success. Fourteen Beta Tau sisters worked together to adopt eleven students. The students’ grade levels ranged from first grade through high school and represented San Antonio ISD, Northside ISD, Northeast ISD, Lytle ISD, and The San Antonio Christian Academies. Everything from back- packs, to pencils, to school uniforms were provided.
The DKG World Fellowship Program
The DKG Fellowship Program began in 1946 as a project to aid women in war-torn countries. To date more than 858 women from over 117 countries have received fellowships to enable them to pursue advanced study in the United States and Canada.
