What:  The final chapter meeting for this first part of the biennium will be held on April 14, 2007.
Where:  June Townsend's home
When:  9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

The Professional Affairs Committee will host our next meeting! Committee members include June, Gale, Melanie, Edna, and Cecilia. We look forward to their terrific program!

Chapter members with their last names beginning with the letters m-z are asked to bring a breakfast dish, as well as anyone who did not bring a dish to the last meeting (in this way there will be plenty of food).

The Professional Affairs Committee reports their program is entitled "Storying Around" a remembrance of the past in education. It is sure to be fun and informative! Also, Connie Lewis will present a demonstration about how to use the internet to shop the new Delta Kappa Gamma Mall. If you buy certain items, i.e. books, gifts, flowers, etc. from this mall, Delta Kappa Gamma receives a percentage of the sale. This will bring some needed revenue into the Society.

Concerns:   A timely concern of the Society is the number of teachers who are leaving the profession. At least 33% of all new teachers leave teaching after/before the first five years. In some areas this is 50%!

A recent FSU journal reports that the College of Educations is giving much attention to this matter. Chapters can help by focusing on help, encouragement, and recognition for its junior members. So, please meet and get to know our new chapter members.

In addition, the International Society has asked us to join in a membership "explosion". We are challenged to invite eight new members, four of which have less than 10 years of teaching experience. Furthermore, we are encouraged to think about diversity in our organization. Educators from a variety of educational environments can only enhance our chapter membership.

In speaking to prospective new members include all the benefits:

  • scholarships
  • travel opportunities
  • recognition
  • auto and home insurance
You can receive high quality auto, home and renters insurance at preferred rates. To ask for preferred rates call 1-800-531-3594.

Legislative Day was well attended by members from chapters in Tallahassee and the surrounding area. Representative Curtis Richardson shared his thoughts about governor Crist's vision for education and stated that he looks forward to the change in administration.

Many chapter members expressed concern about the STAR program and asked Mr. Richardson to share their concern with state legislators. Members in attendance agreed that the merit pay proposal would negatively effect collegiality among teachers and create a competitive atmosphere in schools. Mr. Richardson asked that members contact state representatives with their concerns. He also asked that each of us pay close attention to the negative effects that the proposed tax reduction would have on education, especially schools in small districts.

Ann Lumsden shared information about Delta Kappa Gamma Entertains, a cookbook compiled by southeast region states. Janice will bring order forms to our next meeting.

Personal News:   A book was just dedicated to June Townsend. The book by Eric White is entitled Putting Children First. A reception was held at Dorothy Oven Park and June was honored for her work in effort.

Marie Land is in the process of building a vacation house in Panacea. Several members are still enjoying their travels. Edna Owens is in Norway. We have beautiful photos of everyone and look forward to sharing them during our next meeting.

Other:   There is a celebration going on in Denmark. Now, a new member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Denmark, gives us 15 countries involved in the organization. Betty is writing a note welcoming them into Delta Kappa Gamma.

Don't forget Founder's Day on May 12th at Killearn Country Club. There will be a luncheon and speaker. Also, don't forget to bring a name for a new member! Let the fireworks begin!

Roses to:  Roses go to our telephone committee. They are Carole Jo, Anne, Cecilia, and Jennie. This behind-the-scenes group are so faithful. They are responsible for our successful attendance. We have a top attendance record in the Big Bend, so let's keep our reputation at this final meeting!
