Fall 2019

Preventing Fraud & Scams Officer Tony Michalka, Pubic Information Officer with the O’Fallon Police Department was the guest speaker at the first Beta Omega meeting of the year. Officer Michalka came to speak to the chapter on the topic of Fraud and Scam Prevention. Officer Michalka informed the group that there are two ways in which fraud and scams can be prosecuted; civil and criminal. He said that a criminal prosecution requires an intent to defraud, while a civil case does not. He also gave information on how and where to report fraud. Incidents such as stolen identity should be reported to the police department where you live and crimes should be reported where the incident took place. Some common consumer scams include: construction, roofing, charity, telemarketing, sweepstakes, medical, and identity theft (which is the most common). Consumer Fraud should be reported to AGO, the Attorney General’s Office. Both law enforcement representatives and consumers can report to the AGO, who can be very helpful and the victim’s number one asset. Victims can register a complaint online at the AGO’s website ago.mo.gov or by phone 1-800-392-8222. The AGO has hotline operators, consumer advocates, investigators, attorneys, and mediation help. You may also register there for the No Call List. Officer Michalka gave some tips for Missouri citizens. He suggested not answering unknown calls, keeping watch for numbers close to your own number, and never giving or confirming information, especially SSN or Medicaid Numbers.

Stepping Into Another Year of SEE The Beta Our SEE Program is now in its seventh year. Generation VII has six new teachers stepping into the Francis Howell School District. Beta Omega’s Chapter is working with four Early Educators at Francis Howell Middle School. This is Emily Bowman’s first year and she will be teaching Spanish and Brianne Herr is beginning her third year of teaching Geography. Kimberely Meise and Casey Wombacher have a little bit more experience under their belts; both are beginning their fifth year of teaching. Kimberely will be teaching Science and Casey will be teaching technology. Hollenbeck Middle School has two more teachers that will be supported by the Chapter’s SEE Program. Sandra Davenport and Kymberlee Hunter are both in their first year of teaching. Sandra is a Guidance Counselor and Kymberlee is a Social Studies teacher. All of the SEE Teachers are off to a great start. Their classrooms are organized and their students are already engaged in learning.

In The Spotlight
Meet one of Beta Omega’s newest members, Jennifer Redford, who was inducted into the chapter in December of 2017. Jennifer has taught Language Arts in the Francis Howell School District for the past five years and has an additional seven years of teaching experience at Northwest Middle School in the Hazelwood School District. While teaching in Hazelwood, Jennifer was selected as Teacher of the Year and was the second runner up as District Teacher of the Year. She has also been nominated twice for Teacher of the Year at Hollenbeck Middle School and serves as a mentor. Jennifer is originally from Fort Worth, Texas where her younger sister and family still reside. Jennifer is married and has one son. She enjoys both snow skiing and water skiing, has ran marathons, loves to shop, and spends much of her time supporting her son, Sam at his sporting events. She will be a welcomed asset to Beta Omega.

President's Message Wow! I can’t believe that we are more than half way through my first Biennium as President of Beta Omega. You have all been so great to work with this past year. Thank you for your patience and guidance. We are continuing to assist in achieving our chapter goals of supporting the SEE program, fighting hunger, and adding to our membership. The SEE Program is off to a good start again this year. We have six teachers that we are working with at Hollenbeck and Francis Howell Middle Schools. The teachers seem confident and diligent in their work. We will continue chapter hunger programs through our relationship with Operation Food Search Program and participation in Operation Backpack Program. We hope to partner again with Hollenbeck Middle School. The students there have been doing an excellent job of collecting donations every year. We are grateful to Mr. Beeson for sponsoring and supporting their efforts. We will also be focusing on maintaining and increasing our membership. Thank all of you who have submitted possible candidates. Please continue in your efforts to find teachers who would compliment our chapter and help us to grow. Peg

Spring 2020

Discovering Our Members The December meeting was a lot of fun. Members shared items during the Me-In-A-Box Activity. The items that each brought dealt with something that helped others gain insight into members’ personalities and lives. The chapter saw pictures and heard stories about children, grandchildren, and other family members. Travel experiences were shared. They talked about countries that they visited, travel companions, and funny travel experiences. Lisa brought a model airplane to represent the travel that she wants to do after she retires this school year. Many showed items for their favorite hobbies such as a song book to represent loving to sing in the choir or a mini camper to represent camping with the family. Beta Omega found out that Susan is an avid bird watcher, Linda collects old fashioned button hooks, and Chris is traveling north to see the aurora borealis. During the meeting and program, members enjoyed good food and company and the annual auction raised $170 for chapter projects.

Cooking With Betas Beta Omega got cooking this year and put together a Chapter Cookbook. Members submitted their favorite recipe for the cookbook. At a chapter meeting, everyone presented their recipe and highlighted the story of how that recipe ended up in their recipe box. Some recipes were handed down from generation to generation and became a family tradition served on holidays and other special occasions. Friendships were also responsible for some inspired recipes and sharing. Other recipes came from popular restaurants. Recipes submitted include appetizers, soups, main dishes, casseroles, and desserts. The Betas are going to have a delightful time cooking and eating their way through these delicious recipe creations.

President's Message Happy New Year to all. I wish everyone health and happiness.
Our chapter goals are: increasing our membership, supporting the SEE program, and fighting hunger through our partnership with Operation Food Search.
We have met all of our goals for this biennium, but we do struggle with increasing our membership. Think about your own teaching situation. Does anyone come to mind that would be a good fit for our chapter and organization?
Reach out to them and invite them to one of our meetings. Share information about Delta Kappa Gamma with them. Encourage them to pursue this interest and turn their name in to the membership committee.
I appreciate the support, participation, and attendance of our members. What can we do to make meeting attendance easier? What would be the ideal meeting day? Bring your ideas to the next meeting or send me an email.
I am looking forward to serving you and wish you a great rest of the school year.
Peg
