Alpha Kappa had their April meeting at the home of Missy Jungling. After refreshments, the Technology Committee began our meeting with a wonderful program.

  • Alice-Ann Darrow began by showing us apps for music teachers. She used her iPhone to show us the beatbox, drum kit, finger piano, shazam, and vocal zoo apps.
  • Janice McClung used her iPad to demonstrate how she uses it as a part of her speech-language therapy. She showed us phonemes, story builder, Talking Tom, and SpellBoard apps.
  • Sally Roberts spoke next on Florida's virtual school. She shared that all courses are free to Florida students but is available to anyone. She explained many of the mobile apps available and gave a brief synopsis of the many courses and reviews available.
  • Judy O'Steen presented last and shared about the many uses of the cell phone. She encouraged teachers not to be so quick to ban cell phone use in the classroom, but to encourage students to use them to aid in their education.
After the presentation, many left ready to explain to their husbands the need for an iPhone and iPad!

During the business meeting, Rhonda Work reviewed the treasurer's report and shared that we had a very comfortable balance. She encouraged those who have any DKG expenses to turn in receipts to her for reimbursement.

Missy presented Alice-Ann Darrow, our new member, with her DKG pin. Missy spoke briefly about the Founder's Day Luncheon and explained that an email would soon be sent giving the date and time. Rhonda encouraged us to turn in our reservation as soon as possible.

The next item on the agenda was end of the year helpers. Missy asked for opinions about having retired members volunteer in other DKG member's classes at the end of the year to help out. She said she would send out an email to find out who was interested.

The first program of the 2011-2012 year will be presented by the Communications Committee and will focus on music.

Rhonda Work received a letter from the international president of DKG congratulating her on 50 years in the organization! She also said Ann Black would soon be getting her letter for 50 years!!! Congratulations ladies!!

June Townsend announced the FATE Annual Symposium on April 16th.

Respectfully submitted,

Dawn James
