CTAUN focuses on teaching children about living responsibly in a world made increasingly interdependent by globalization. We support educators in addressing:
- How we can cultivate active global citizens who can communicate across cultures, who can learn to function in the global marketplace, respect diversity, prevent the conflicts that arise from environmental destruction and limited resources, and who can make peace when these conflicts arise;
- How we can imbue them with the importance of international law and the conviction that "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere?" Martin Luther King, Jr.; and
- How we can teach them that they are capable of making a difference.
CTAUN provides opportunities for educators to learn, understand, and appreciate the work of the UN and to incorporate global awareness into curricula and school activities at all levels. Annual conferences for educators and concerned citizens attract participants from the US, Latin America, Europe and Africa. "Best Practices Awards" are presented to professionals who develop their own curricula and projects to teach children about the UN and global challenges. CTAUN’s website provides numerous resources for teachers, including lesson plans, materials, and activities.
The theme of the 2014 CTAUN Conference at the UN was "Promoting Peace Through Education." The detailed conference report is on their website www.teachun.org
